6/27/15: North State Modified Series at All American Speedway
The 33 Team ran our 3rd race of the year with the North State Modified Series at All American Speedway last Saturday. This time it was Luke Kaper's... turn behind the wheel. We really worked hard preparing for this one and showed up at the track with our heads held high. During practice we had some decent speed, but needed just a little bit more. The car just didn't seem to have the drive off the corners that we were looking for. Qualified 16th of 21 with a car that turned very loose. After qualifying we noticed that the car was not exactly sitting right. The ride heights had somehow gotten way off the original set-up. We pulled out the scales and went to work. The crew worked their tails off to get the set-up as close as possible prior to the drop of the green flag. We started the race towards the back of the field and on the outside. Within only a couple of laps Luke reported to me on the radio that the car was extremely loose and had zero drive off. We caught an early caution and pulled off for some adjustments. A few laps into the next run, Luke wanted more of the same. Again, we caught a caution and were able to make some more adjustments to dial the car in. After the 3rd time off track and a major sway bar and track bar adjustment, Luke was able to pass 5 cars on the outside in only 3 laps. He was absolutely moving at that point. He caught the next car and started to go to work. Said car would not hold a line. Luke went to the outside, only to be shoved into the wall, he went to the inside to be shoved into the dirt, then back to the outside and again the wall. At that point Luke decided this guy was not going to hold his line and well, he got the spin cycle. He caught our tire as he went around, thus knocking the front end out of alignment. I pulled Luke off for an adjustment and to check the front of the car. The officials decided to go green that lap without any warning and we barely made it on in front of the field. It took about 12 laps for the lead car to get around us. Luke was driving an injured car and wheeling it! He settled in behind third and raced the last 10 or so laps. 4th couldn't catch us and 3rd wasn't walking away. At the end of the night, the car was mostly in one piece and loaded on the trailer.
As always, we couldn't do this without the support of Gorham Tile (Mike Gorham), Bobo Graphics, Deckard Construction (Kyle Deckardle Ky & Kevin Deckard), MNM Painting and SC Holsters. We also have to thank the crew Blake Williams, Patrick Williams, Will Harmon and Brian Hickey. |

4/18/15: North State Modified Series at All American Speedway
It was the first race of the season for the 33 team with the North State Modified Series at All American Speedway last Saturday night. We loaded up and headed to the track feeling pretty confident coming off of a great practice session 2 weeks ago. Once we finally made it on track, the task proved more difficult. We immediately started having an intermittent issue with the car deciding to shut itself off as it felt like. We were not able to get any full speed practice laps in as we spent all afternoon troubleshooting this problem that seemed to come and go. Qualified a horrible 19th of 23, as the car wouldn't stay running. Finally, after qualifying, we were able to narrow the electrical issue down to a faulty ignition switch. We started from the back and pulled off at every chance for an adjustment. The car started getting better and I started getting in a rhythm. We were able to avoid most of the chaos on track and eventually worked our way all the way up to 8th. On lap 43 a busted radiator cap ended our race. We were still able to bring it home 12th and with zero damage, which in itself could be considered a win.
I have to thank the crew, Luke Kaper, Will Harmon, Blake Williams and Brian for working tirelessly all day long and never giving up. Luke and Will were able to guide me through traffic and crashes without a mark on the car. I would also especially like to thank our sponsors Deckard Construction (Kyle Deckardle Ky & Kevin Deckard), Gorham Tile ( Mike Gorham), SC Holsters (Chris Lambert & Luke Small), MNM Painting, and Bobo Signs. Without them, we wouldn't be able to do what we do. |
